Judge Nap Calls Out Manafort Judge: Stop Making This About You

10 August 2018

Both Gates and Manafort worked on Trump's 2016 campaign.

Judge T.S. Ellis III has clashed with prosecutors throughout Paul Manafort's trial. In the filing, they argued that Ellis should instruct the jury that he made an error in admonishing them during the testimony of IRS agent Michael Welch.

Manafort is facing another trial in Washington, D.C., later this year on other charges brought against him by Mueller, including obstructing justice, conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal foreign lobbying.

For the previous two days in court, Gates has testified that he and Manafort committed bank and tax fraud together. When the trial broke for lunch, Manafort looked back at his wife, sitting in the front row, smiled and winked at her, followed by a quick shake of his head, seeming to indicate he was unfazed by the morning's testimony. He is also charged with bank fraud.

Kositzka, Wicks & Co. said in a statement Tuesday it was "shocked by Ms. Laporta's testimony, which clearly represents that she failed to meet the firm's high standards for professional and ethical conduct in her work for Mr. Manafort".

Laporta ... said she knew what she did was "not appropriate", adding that "you can't pick and choose what's a loan and what's income". He is the first person to be tried on charges brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election. Although the charges largely pre-date the five months Manafort spent on Trump's campaign, he had made millions of dollars working for pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians.

Those who dealt with Manafort's taxes also testified that even though they asked Manafort whether he maintained any bank accounts overseas, he told them no.

From the prosecution's perspective, Magionos' testimony was key to the jury's understanding of the case. For the past few days, Ellis has rebuked the prosecution on several occasions. The judge said he thought he'd he'd made clear no witnesses were allowed to sit in on the rest of the trial, and after the prosecutors said they'd heard differently, Judge Ellis erupted.

He poked fun at himself Wednesday as he haggled with attorneys over the number and type of charts prosecutors could present during the testimony of the accountant. They expect to wrap up their case this week.

Former President Donald Trump's aide Rick Gates returned to the court Wednesday to testify against his former boss, Paul Manafort, in special counsel Robert Mueller's federal tax trial against the former Trump campaign chairman.

He scoffed at the idea Mr Gates had repented for his actions, noting that prosecutors have said they won't oppose his bid for probation and getting him to acknowledge he had not repaid the money he had taken from Mr Manafort.

Gates, who is 46 and married, admitted: "There was a period in my life, about 10 years ago, when I had a relationship, yes".

Gates said he helped Manafort hide secret bank accounts in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Grenadines.

Mr Manafort and Mr Gates were the first people indicted in Mr Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Gates said that Manafort asked him to meet with one of the Ukrainian businessmen involved in paying him millions of dollars to find out if one of the shell companies used to pay him was a "clean entity".

"I think Gates was a very poor witness".

The topic came up as Kevin Downing, Manafort's defense attorney, hammered away at Gates' admitted habit of filing doctored expense reports in an attempt to paint Gates as self-motivated and untrustworthy.

Prosecutors have noted that Gates and Manafort were not the targets of the investigation at the time of the interview.

Gates appeared nervous on the witness stand at the court in Alexandria, Virginia, blinking frequently, his throat apparently dry as he spoke.

Gates admitted to embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars - $3 million, Downing claimed, but could not definitively prove - from Manafort.
